Put a bird in it…

Or, how we made Cajun deep-fried Turkey for Thanksgiving.

We have been dreaming of making fried turkey for a few years now. We bought a turkey fryer a few years ago, with the full intention of using it. This year, we made good on our promise, and managed to keep everyone safe in the process.

The most important step in the process is to ensure that you make note of the weight of the turkey so that you can measure the appropriate amount of oil to place in the fryer. There are several tutorials online that can assist you with the appropriate ratios. If there is too much oil, you risk overflowing the fryer and spilling oil onto your heat source.

We started by thawing the turkey in the refrigerator for 3 days. Then, we marinated the turkey with butter and Cajun spices for 24 hours.

Then, we heated the oil to a consistent 325 degrees.

WARNING: Set up your turkey frying operation in a place that is away from buildings that might catch fire! We cooked our turkey in the driveway away from the house.

The turkey was cooked for 1.5 hours.

Waiting was the hardest part of the process. The turkey smelled amazing, and we couldn’t wait to taste it.

The finished product! The family raved about the taste. The only downside is that we are on the hook to make turkey for Thanksgiving next year!
